Ensure your professional and personal development
Professional best practice and individual support
I offer peer support, professional guidance, supervision, and mentoring for other end of life consultants, doulas, art therapists and end of life workers for humans and pets. You can book a session on an ad hoc or ongoing basis, depending on your own needs.
Supervision is an essential part of professional best practice, allowing for debriefing, empathetic support from a knowledgeable professional, and to help avoid burnout. For those who work with the actively dying, unexpected death, and with after-death body care, ritual and funerals, supervision can be invaluable.
Expert 1 to 1 intensive support offered to: end of life consultants, death doulas, creatives, end of life practitioners, end of life students
Note: Annetta is in Australian Eastern Standard time – Hobart/Melbourne/Sydney. Please check your Zoom invitation for start and end times in your own timezone if different to AEST.
How supervision and mentoring works
Supervision is offered as a specialist service for death doulas and those who work with the dying, those close to the dying and with the dead. Supervision encompasses debriefing and professional support and Annetta is both confidential and thorough. Mentoring is offered as a specialist service for students and new practitioners to foster a sense of professional practice, community and self-aware responses.
Email Annetta for a session, making sure to include an outline of what you are looking for in supervision or mentoring goals. All sessions are 60 minutes long, and recording of video sessions can be arranged. Please allow an additional 15 minutes in your first session to discuss goals and challenges in more detail.
Please have a pen and paper or other note-taking materials to hand. Handwritten notes, not typed if possible, are recommended. Pets are most welcome!
You can attend as many or as few sessions as you determine you need. There is no minimum limit for sessions with Annetta. You do not have to be enrolled in Annetta’s end of life training course to be a mentee or to request supervision. Australian and international clients welcome.
Supervision and mentoring sessions can be booked on an ad hoc, casual basis, or on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedule depending on your needs. All sessions are invoiced in advance – direct bank deposit for Australian clients and PayPal for international clients.
Note: Confidentiality is guaranteed, within the bounds of State, Territory and Federal laws; Annetta is a mandatory reporter.

What are supervision and mentoring and why are they important?

What is supervision?
Supervision is a professional practice where students and practitioners alike can receive individual feedback, observations, answers and support from another seasoned practitioner. A good supervisor listens deeply, holds a space for student self-development without judgement, models best practice, and upholds standards.
Supervision is different to therapy in that practitioners are not ‘clients’ per se and we meet as equals in the overall field. I have a wealth of practitioner and therapy experience, and am able to hold the supervision space for a practitioner while appropriately supporting professional insight, reflective practices, and self-awareness. I have offered this service for some years and am a compassionate and empathetic supervisor.
Supervision is an often invaluable space for exploring doubts, fears and uncertainties. Supervision can be regular, or on an informal schedule, depending upon what each person needs. The ultimate goal of supervision is to foster resilience in practitioners, develop strong boundaries, and to support experiential learning. Note: Best practice and relevant State, Territory and Federals laws are always upheld.

What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a traditional professional relationship of support where more experienced colleagues train and advise younger or less-experienced colleagues.
A good mentor is patient, models strong boundaries and helps newer members of a professional community understand ethics, best practice, and professionalism specific to the field (in this case, end of life).

Why are supervision and mentoring important?
None of us are perfect on our own – supervision helps us better understand our own responses to clients and situations, and mentoring helps us establish a professional presence and sense of community with other end of life practitioners.
If we do not engage with more seasoned professionals – or debrief when we feel challenged or unsure – then we run a risk of burning out or falling into poor practices. Bad practices can hurt our reputations, our communities, and even our clients. Supervision and mentoring help maintain strong standards and good community ties.

Do I have to be your student, or have studied with you, to work with you?
No – although I do mentor and supervise former and current students, I also work with people who trained with others.
I like to foster and encourage strong community networks and ties, and I think best practice can be international in scope.
How Do I know If Supervision or Mentoring is Right For Me?
This is a personal determination.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, tired or distracted, then engaging a supervisor is a good idea and can help prevent burnout. Mentors can help new practitioners stay focused and keep perspective on steep learning curves.
Are you studying or working in end of life?
Engaging in some supervision or mentoring from the beginning helps you build resilience and practical self-care skills.
Do you encounter work situations where you are not sure if you responded appropriately or do not know what to do?
Work of this kind means there is always something new to learn. Supervision can help with debriefing and perspective, mentoring can help with creating a more robust set of models to use as responses in new situations.
Do you work in isolation or relative isolation?
A good mentor or supervisor can help with feelings of isolation and loneliness in your work, helping you to feel more connected to, and part of, a community of practice that is international.
Would you like to expand your service set but feel out of your depth?
You can save a good deal of time and energy upskilling while working with a mentor or supervisor (depending on your needs at the time) as you will be able to draw on experience and wisdom.
Do you feel tired or overwhelmed in your work, even with a light client load?
Supervision and mentoring helps your gain healthy boundaries, practice good self-care, and engage with best standard work practices – all of which can help prevent burnout or a need to leave the field entirely.
